“INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST FASCISM, RACISM, ANTI-SEMITISM” IN TKUMA CENTER

 

On November 7th 2007 “Tkuma” All-Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies has conducted educational seminars for junior school students of L.I. Shneerson specialized school #144 and for senior school students of specialized ecological-economical school #67. The seminars were devoted to International Day against fascism, racism, anti-Semitism.

“TKUMA HOLOCAUST LIBRARY” PRESENTATION IN MOSCOW

 

On October 18th the “Holocaust” Russian Research and Educational Center has organized the meeting of public and representatives of intelligentsia in Andrey Sakharov Moscow Center. The participants have visited the unique exhibition devoted to Raul Wallenberg, who rescued thousands of Jewish Hungarians during WWII and died in Stalin’s prison after the Budapest liberation by the Soviet Union forces.

On October 18-21st Tkuma All-Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies has participated in CIS Jewish Communities Conference “Limmud-2007”. The Conference has welcomed the representatives of Jewish Communities from FSU, England, Germany, Israel and the USA. The educational Conference based on principles of pluralism, volunteering and fully availability for participants has been conducted in Moscow area (Pokrovskoe) and hosted over 600 participants.

1. On October 15-16, 2007 in Kyiv Tkuma” (“Renascence”) All-Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies is to conduct International Pedagogical Conference Lessons of HolocaustLessons of Tolerance. The Conference will welcome educational specialists from Ukraine, Belarus, Israel, Russia, who have great experience in Holocaust and other genocides teaching and research at educational institutions of different countries of the world.

The Conference will raise many disputable questions, which accompany teachers during dramatic historical events and tolerance issues teaching. It is made an attempt to analyze comparatively Holocaust, Holodomor and other genocides.

The Conference participants will acquaint with the new programs and projects, educational and methodical aids, take part at workshops and visit educational institutions and exhibitions. It is important that the participants will have the possibility to demonstrate their own practical skills during group workshops. The Conference participants will participate in the Remembrance Ceremony of Holocaust victims in Babiy Yar, which is to be conducted on October 16, 2007 at 11.00 in Babiy Yar Memorial Complex.

 

2. The relevant constituent part of the International Pedagogical Conference will be summing up and winnersawarding of ІV International Contest of studentsand teacherscreative and scholary-research works “Lessons of Holocaust – Lessons of Tolerance”, which was carried out  under auspices of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

 

3. On October 16-18, 2007 Tkuma International Scholary-Methodical Seminar for museum programs’ coordinators of Jewish organizations in Ukraine is to be conducted. Leading specialists from Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and Russia will participate in the Seminar. Museum programs play essential role not only in preserving Jewish national identity, but also in activating the Jewish community life via involving the representatives of different generations to investigate their backgrounds as well as comprehending the history of Jews in Ukraine, in particular one of its most dramatic events – Holocaust history.

The aim of the Tkuma seminar is to provide methodical assistance to the museum programs’ coordinators in systematization of the museum expositions, to increase the efficiency of the work and introduction the interactive character of the museum activity.

 

4. On October 16 from 14.00 till 15.00 presentation of Tkuma Center new publications is to be held:

- Dr. Yitzhak Arads monograph History of the Holocaust. Soviet Union and annexed territories” (firstly published in Russian language);

- Multimedia e-book by Igor Shchupak “Why Do We Study Holocaust?

 

ON OCTOBER 16 FROM 13.00 TIL 15.00 THE MAIN EVENTS ARE TO BE HELD:

- Summing up of ІV International Contest of creative works and winners awarding;

- Summing up of V International Pedagogical Conference;

- Presentation of Tkuma Center new publications and multimedia edition;

- Opening of Tkuma International Scholary-Methodical Seminar for museum programs’ coordinators of Jewish organizations in Ukraine.

Memorials and museums commemorating six million Jews – victims of Nazism have been erected all over the World: Yad Vashem Museum in Jerusalem (1953), Memorial to Holocaust Victims in Berlin (2005), Shoah Memorial in Paris (1956), Anne Frank House in Amsterdam (1958), United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington (1994), Museum commemorating 1,5 million Jewish children in Hiroshima and others.

The Holocaust Museum is also being established in Dnipropetrovsk. On June, 2007 Leon Sherman with his wife Lada arrived to Ukraine to native Dnipropetrovsk to present the unique museum exhibits to Tkuma Holocaust History Museum.

CHRISTIAN-JUDAIC DIALOGUE

 

 

For the second time Seventh-Day Adventists Church and Tkuma (Renascence) All-Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies have conducted the next Christian-Judaic Dialogue in Dnipropetrovsk.

 

As on October, 2006 when the first dialogue has been held, the facilitators of “Christian-Judaic Dialogue” in 2007 were Dr. Igor Shchupak, Director of Tkuma All-Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies, Maxim Gordienko, Pastor of Seventh Days Adventists Church, and Arey Vudka, teacher of TANAHA (Old Testament) and Hebrew.

The Dialogue organizers, who have invited interested people of different religions and confessions to participate in the meeting, set the task to unite Christians, Jews and believers of other confessions in the assembly hall of Scientists’ House for sharing their opinions and dialogue. They aimed to discuss differences and similarities between two religions – Christianity and Judaism, discover peculiarities of these regions on the stage of their origin through the excursus into the History, talk about tolerance, reciprocal respect and international relationships in modern society.

During three days (June 24-26) different subject have been discussed. The organizers have emphasized on such a painful subject as genocide of both Ukrainian people – Holodomor, 1932-1933, and Jewish people – Holocaust. The subject of Christianity and Judaism relationships in the beginning of the millennium has been also considered.

All three days of the Christian-Judaic Dialogue have been conducted accompanying by marvelous Ukrainian, Jewish and Russian music by V. Skuratovskij, A. Shkola and Klezmer Choir of Dnipropetrovsk Jewish Community Center.

The Ukrainian-Polish Borderlands under the Soviet Regime 1939-1941: Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish Social Life and Relations.”

 

On June 18-20th, 2007 Polish Center for Holocaust Research, the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology and Polish Academy of Sciences (Warsaw, Poland) and “Tkuma” (“Renascence”) All-Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies (Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) have conducted the International Scholary Conference “The Ukrainian-Polish Borderlands under the Soviet Regime 1939-1941: Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish Social Life and Relations” in Lviv.

    The conference has been organized thanks to the support of Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research and the Claims Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

“Berezhany in the Memory of Poles, Jews and Ukrainians”

 

On June 12th, 2007 the International Conference “Berezhany in the Memory of Poles, Jews and Ukrainians” has been conducted in Berezhany, Ukraine. The conference commemorated the final liquidation of the Berezhany Jewish community, which occurred on June 12th, 1943. On June 11th, 2007 the conference was preceded by a march in the footsteps of the last Berezhany Jews, who had been executed in Okopisko, the old Jewish cemetery, sixty four years ago. Israelis, representing Berezhany survivors and the second and third generation of Berezhany Jews, have been joined in this commemorative march by dozens of Ukrainian residents of the town. The marchers’ column stopped several times to listen to the living testimonies by architect Menachem Katz (Haifa, Israel), the only survivor of the June 1943 execution. Prayers for the repose of the dead have been recited at the Okopisko monument commemorating the Berezhany Holocaust victims.

THE PROJECT “NAMES…” IS BEING HELD

 

 

Every nation has its own history – the history of joy and grief. There exist Jewish, Ukrainian, Russian tradition – to commemorate perished, to remember all namely, because every person has own name…”

With such words Dr. Igor Shchupak, Tkuma Center director has opened the Ceremony of Awarding participants and volunteers of the Project “Names…”. The project has been carrying out over the year by Tkuma All-Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies (“Renascence”) jointly with Yad Vashem National Institute of Catastrophe and Heroism Remembrance (Israel). The Ceremony has been conducted on June 8th in Dnepropetrovsk Community Center library. The volunteers have been awarded by the diplomas by the honored Yad Vashem guests: Yad Vashem Chairman Nathan Eitan, the major sponsor of Project “Names...”, Yossie Hollonder, the Project “Names...” Coordinator Boris Maftsir, and Dr. Aharon Weiss, Tkuma Center Academic Adviser “spiritual coordinator”. The Chief Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk Region Shmuel Kaminetskiy has also participated.

NOVOZLATOPIL TRAGEDY

“NOVOZLATOPIL TRAGEDY 1941- 1943”

 

On May 29th, 2007 the opening of Memorial “Novozlatopil Tragedy 1941- 1943”, commemorating 1200 perished Jews, has been conducted in Novozlatopil village of Zaporizhzhia region.

Novozlatopil is a former Jewish settlement. In 1929-1941 it was the administrative center of Jewish national area, which was 50% populated by Jews. Side by side Jews and Ukrainians survived Holodomor in 1932-1933. But not all managed to survive during Nazi occupation.

The Tkuma (Renascence) All-Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies (Dnipropetrovsk) and the Ukrainian State Historical and Architectural Society in Berezhany announce the forthcoming International Conference “Berezhany in the Memory of Poles, Jews and Ukrainians”. The conference, which will take place in Berezhany on June 12, 2007, will be the first of its kind. It will be for the first time that the history and memory concerning a small town in Western Ukraine will be discussed by scholars and living witnesses. The Conference will commemorate the final liquidation of the Jewish community of Berezhany, which occurred on June 12, 1943.

Seminar “The Ark” is to be conducted on August 2007.

Title “The Ark” originated last summer when Tkuma Center has been successfully implemented international inter-confessional youth seminar in Univ Lavra (Lviv region).

Representatives of different nations in Ukraine consider Univ Lavra to be a sacred land. In Univ during World War II priests and monks of Greek Catholic Church had been rescuing Jewish children, suffering from Holocaust, supporting Ukrainian and Polish children.

REMEMBRANCE RELAY

REMEMBRANCE RELAY

 

Tkuma Center has traditionally conducted the “Remembrance Relay” devoted to International Holocaust Day.

On January 15th, 2007 Tkuma Center has welcomed active participants of the programs to begin the “Relay”. During the meeting the following issues have been considered:

- the modern Holocaust perception in Europe and in the world,

- Catastrophe prevention measures,

- authority and public empowerment to resist fascism and nazism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia.

“There Is No Other’s Pain”

Rememberence Ceremony Devoted to the Holocaust Day

 

  On April 16th, 2007 “Tkuma” (“Renascence”) All-Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies has conducted remembrance activities devoted to the Holocaust Day, which commemorates six million Jews, exterminated by Nazis during WWII.

  Holocaust Day is commemorated on 27th day of Nisan month according to the Jewish calendar. On this day in 1943 there have been the revolt in Warsaw ghetto which nowadays considered as a symbol of Jews’ resistance.

  On April 19, 1943 German military units using artillery and armored cars has commenced the ghetto destruction and its inhabitants extermination. During five weeks ghetto defenders had been putting up heroic resistance to outnumbered and armed enemy forces. Warsaw ghetto destruction has been finished on May 16th, 1943.

“Interreligious Tolerance and Mutual Understanding”  for Jewish and Non­Jewish Schools’ Students in Dnipropetrovsk

 

  Every nation celebrates not only national holidays, but also the religious ones, i.e. those which belong to the certain religious community of the state.

  Thus, there is a striving to preserve and hand down the cultural and historical heritage across the generations. Most people especially honor holiday rites, the point is that the title “svyato” (holiday) originated from the notion “svyatist’” (which means sanctity).

  To turn national peculiarities in multinational Ukrainian society into advantages, which encourage cultural exchange and mutual enrichment, to foster the atmosphere of heart-openness and mutual understanding through acquainting with culture, history, customs and traditions of different nationalities– those are the objectives Tkuma Center is being implemented via educational activity.

    Yad Vashem is the world-famous international museum as well as the key scientific educational institution on Holocaust History investigation. Tkuma Center is working towards the developing of cooperation with Yad Vashem. On January, 2007 two centers have come to the agreement concerning interchange of materials published in Yad Vashem and Tkuma Center. Henceforth, everyone can get acquainted with the book novelties of both countries in Israel Institute and Ukrainian Center libraries. Ephraim Kei, director of “International Seminars in English and the Jewish World” in Yad Vashem, was so kind to present Tkuma Center some multimedia materials which are of great use and importance for Ukrainian teachers.

    On January 2007 Yad Vashem has conducted the Seminar. Tkuma Center has been presented by its director Igor Shchupak. Immensely significant issues on Holocaust history, Philosophy, Theology, Philology, etc. have been discussed during the seminar, which has been facilitated by outstanding scholars Dr. Ephraim Kaye, (International Seminars in English and the Jewish World Director) and Prof. David Ebstein (Desk for Programs for Jewish Educators). The event has welcomed a lot of teachers including recognized Holocaust scholars Prof. David Bankier, Prof. Menahem Milson, Prof. Yeduda Bauer and others.
