ON THE SEMINAR IN YAD VASHEM

On January 2007 Yad Vashem has conducted the Seminar. Tkuma Center has been presented by its director Igor Shchupak. Immensely significant issues on Holocaust history, Philosophy, Theology, Philology, etc. have been discussed during the seminar, which has been facilitated by outstanding scholars Dr. Ephraim Kaye, (International Seminars in English and the Jewish World Director) and Prof. David Ebstein (Desk for Programs for Jewish Educators). The event has welcomed a lot of teachers including recognized Holocaust scholars Prof. David Bankier, Prof. Menahem Milson, Prof. Yeduda Bauer and others.

The seminar participants got the latest west and Jewish historiography achievements, gained excellent experience in scriptural texts analysis performed by Oxford Professor David Ebstein. It was strange and absorbing to listen to lecture on Soviet Union history of 1930es targeted for USA, Canada and Australia audience.

The participants acquired the priceless experience in Holocaust history study in English-speaking countries and Ukraine. The Tkuma Center presentation produced a favourable impression on the participants who highly appreciated the varieties of directions of Ukrainian organization.

Sightseeing tour along the country has also been included in the seminar’s program. The participants of the seminar had a chance to see the sights from Galilee Mountains and the Lebanon border on the north of Israel up to the Dead Sea and Negev Desert on the south. Three days were not certainly enough to enjoy lively impressions. Though, a number of years cannot be enough to visit most of historical sights in Jerusalem. Thus, over 400 itineraries are fixed solely in Old City.

The closing of the seminar has been marked by the symbolic event. A young girl and her parents have visited the lecture to thank publicly a young seminar participant saved the girl’s life. This girl had an incurable illness and only wonder could save her – she needed spinal cord donor, who would correspond to her biologically. Her parents’ biological data didn’t correspond to her. They could hardly hope to find a donor.

And by some miracle Esther’s biological data corresponded and risking her health Esther decided to save absolutely unknown child. The saved girl is recovering now. She lives and enjoys the world making happy her parents and friends. And now the stories about kindness, self-sacrifice, value of human life are not just a story for her.
