January 29–30, 2018 Dnipro welcomed All-Ukrainian Scholarly-Pedagogical seminar dedicated to International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The event was organized by Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies, Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”.

The seminar gathered teachers and history educators from all over Ukraine, scholars, methodologists of regional institutes of advanced teacher training, representatives of working groups on the improvement of school curricula on history.

The event was opened by Dr. Rimma Aronova, Rector of “Beit Khana” International Humanitarian and Pedagogical Institute, Raisa Yevtushenko, Chief Specialist of the Department of General Secondary and Preschool Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Anton Demura, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Science of Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration, Dr. Igor Shchupak.

The program of the seminar included number of educational activities: reports of scholars and educators on topical issues of the history of the Holocaust and other genocides, the Second World War and memory of these events; round tables and discussions on the problems of reforming the education system in Ukraine; presentations of scholarly and methodological literature.

Among the speakers who presented reports at the seminar – Dr. Iegor Vradii, head of Museum and Research Department of “Tkuma” Institute; Dr. Tamara Bakka, Associate Professor of the Department of Methodology of Social Studies and Gender Education of M. Drahomanov National Pedagogical University (Kyiv); Dr. Faina Vynokyrova, Deputy Director for Scientific and Methodological Work of the State Archives of Vinnytsia Region (Vinnytsia); Prof. Igor Hyrych, Head of the Department of the Institute of Ukrainian Archaeography and Source Studies named after M. Hrushevskyi of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kyiv); Dr. Yurii Mytrofanenko, Senior Lecturer of Department of Theory and Methodology of Secondary Education of Kirovohrad Regional Institute of Advanced Teacher Training named after V. Sukhomlynskyi (Kropyvnytskyi), Dr. Igor Shchupak (Dnipro).

Within the framework of the seminar the round table “New Curricular on History and New Requirements for Teaching History at Schools” was held. This session was moderated by Dr. Marian Mudryi, Associate Professor of the Department of Modern History of Ukraine at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Head of the Working Group of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and Raisa Yevtushenko. During the active discussion, educators focused on the reform of the secondary education system in Ukraine, the introduction of changes to curricula on history, the introduction of an integrated course of history instead of a separate study of Ukraine’s history and world history.

During the open discussion moderated by Ivan Patryliak, Dean of the Historical Faculty of T. Shevchenko Kyiv National University, Raisa Yevtushenko, Dr. Igor Shchupak educators have discussed the experience of contemporary museum practices in presenting the history of the Second World War and the Holocaust.

At the end of the seminar, all participants received official certificates.
