On February 28, the online seminar “Rethinking of the East European Studies in Times of Upheaval” was held, organized by the PRISMA UKRAINA program (Germany). Dr. Igor Shchupak participated in the scientific event.

The seminar was moderated by prof. Andriy Portnov (Viadrina European University). The participants of the seminar had the opportunity to listen to the lecture “Debates on the Russian war and genocide: from Chechnya and Syria to Ukraine” held by Dr. Uğur Ümit Üngör (University of Amsterdam). The speaker offered his vision of the nature of genocides and the problem of their definition (in particular, legal and political approaches to the concept); characterized various genocides in modern times (the Holocaust and tragedies in the former Yugoslavia, Syria, Chechnya, the modern genocide of the Russian Federation against the Ukrainian people).

“In addition to very original ideas, I also heard information that was unknown to me, in particular - details of the genocide of the russian federation against the Syrian people (Aleppo and not only), – noted Dr. Shchupak. – I consider it particularly important to discuss the issue of responsibility for genocide, without which the spiral of violence will only continue to spin”.
