Projects for School and University Students

On October 3, an educational class was held at the Lviv Polygraphic College, the central topic of which was the history of the Holocaust, the consequences of Nazi policy, and the importance of preserving historical memory. The director of “Tkuma” Institute, historian and author of school textbooks Dr. Igor Shchupak, as well as the deputy director for scientific work of the Institute, Dr. Yehor Vradii, visited the institution. Representatives of the “Orion” publishing house, editor-in-chief Iryna Krasutska and deputy editor-in-chief Iryna Rudenko, spoke with them.

For students and teachers, the guests held a lecture-discussion “Based on Real Events: The History of Books About a Difficult Past,” which focused on publications dedicated to the tragedy of the Holocaust, the life of the population under Nazi occupation, the history of Jewish communities in Ukraine, and key events of World War II. During the session, scientists presented several important and unique works, including:
- a collection of photographic materials about Ukraine during the Nazi occupation;
- the first informal textbook on the history of the Holocaust;
- modern school history textbooks created by the author teams of the “Orion” Educational and Cultural Center;
- memories of Holocaust survivors.
Such publications are designed to form critical thinking in young people, introduce students to the history of genocides and mass crimes, and teach them to recognize the dangers of
totalitarian ideologies and manifestations of xenophobia. The speakers shared with the audience the stories of how these books came to be – often no less dramatic and emotionally charged than the events they describe. The open format of communication allowed students to more deeply understand the nature of historical memory, the importance of personal testimonies, and the role of historical education in preventing the recurrence of crimes against humanity.
At the end of the meeting, the “Tkuma” Institute and the “Orion”’ Center for the Study of History presented the college with a selection of valuable publications that have replenished its library and will be useful for further studying complex and important topics of the 20th century.
