On January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a historical webinar “Genocide Repeated?” was held, organized by “Tkuma” Institute together with the International Center for Auschwitz and Holocaust Education (Auschwitz, Poland) and the “Orion” Publishing House.
The webinar was attended by leading Ukrainian and Polish experts: historian, teacher, director of the International Center for Auschwitz and Holocaust Education, deputy director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum (Poland) Andrzej Katzorzyk; deputy director of the “Tkuma1” Institute, deputy director of the Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” Dr. Yehor Vradii; head of the Department of Educational Programs of “Tkuma” Institute Iryna Piskareva; Dr. Igor Shchupak.
During the webinar, participants spoke about the symbols of the Holocaust – Auschwitz-Birkenau and Babyn Yar; about the signs of genocide in the Holocaust and the current war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Considerable attention was paid to the symbolic meaning of Auschwitz-Birkenau and Babyn Yar as places of remembrance of the Holocaust, as well as the importance of correct historical terminology – in particular, why formulations such as “Polish concentration camps” or “Oswiecim death camp” are unacceptable. A separate block was devoted to the activities of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust in Poland, as well as the role of studying the Holocaust in Ukrainian society. The webinar participants spoke about educational and creative projects of Ukrainian teachers, students and schoolchildren dedicated to the topic of the Holocaust, and why today, in conditions of war, these works are perceived especially acutely.
