PRESENTATION OF “TKUMA” INSTITUTE PUBLICATIONS  IN COOPERATION WITH THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE OF UKRAINE

During February 25 – March 4 Jerusalem (Israel) welcomed seminar for Ukrainian educators, organized by “Tkuma” Institute and Yad Vashem. The event gathered history teachers and scholars from Dnipro, Kyiv, Lviv, Kropyvnytskyi, Kryvyi Rih, Mykolaiev, Odesa, Rivne, Sumy, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv.

During the week they listened to lectures by leading specialists Yad Vashem Dr. Zeev Dashevsky, Dr. Mordechai Yushkovsky, Dr. Anna Novikov and others. Noa Sigal and Olga Dyuk introduced the innovative methods of working with students. The several-day guided tour though the Yad Vashem was conducted by experienced guide Ilona Engert. Meeting with Jacob Wexler made unforgettable impression on the participants of the seminar. He survived the Holocaust being very small child; he was rescued and brought up by a Polish family in the Catholic atmosphere, and later decided to become Roman Catholic priest. Only in later days of his life, he found out about his Jewish roots.

The experience exchange in teaching World War II and the Holocaust in schools and higher educational institutions of Ukraine was also very useful. Teachers presented their methodological work in the field of educational work, gathering testimonies of oral history, preserving the memory of the Holocaust.

The program of the seminar was not limited to auditorium work and research of museum exhibition. Diverse excursion program was provided daily: the Museum of Israel, the Wailing Wall, the Mossad Fortress, the Dead Sea, and pilgrimage shrines.
