On October 2, “Tkuma” Institute, together with the Ukrainian Educational and Publishing Center “Orion”, held a one-day educational and methodological seminar for history and humanities teachers in Lviv. During the seminar, Dr. Igor Shchupak, together with the editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian Educational and Publishing Center “Orion” Iryna Krasutska, presented the latest examples of history textbooks prepared over the past few years.
It is worth noting that the author teams, which have been working on the creation of textbooks and teaching aids for over a decade, are in themselves a unique combination of representatives of academic science and the experience of practicing teachers who strive for constant professional improvement. It is noteworthy that the most active discussion revolved around how and with the help of what new educational forms to teach the history of the "long" and at the same time tragic for Ukraine and the world 20th century. How to talk about the Holocaust, convey the importance of the lessons of this terrible genocide and at the same time does not traumatize children of the younger and middle age groups. No less important issue were the ways of "implementing" regional (local) history in the process of teaching world history, as well as the history of Ukraine at school. This was the topic of the speech of the Deputy Director of the Tkuma Institute, Dr. Yegor Vradii. He focused on how the history of Galicia reflects the unique local experience of coexistence of different ethnic, religious and linguistic groups of people under conditions of war and genocide and how, at the same time, global trends in historical development influenced the lives of residents of Western Ukrainian territories.
A kind of “highlight” of the educational seminar was the participants' communication with the leading cartographer of Ukraine, Iryna Rudenko, who presented the latest cartographic textbooks and, together with Zoryana Bondar, an employee of “Tkum” Institute, spoke about the peculiarities of the “publishing kitchen” when working on such a unique product as a historical map and historical atlases.
