On March 21, a seminar for teachers was held in Odessa, dedicated to the topic of historical myths, truth and fakes in modern education. The event, which brought together teachers of history, law and civic education, was organized by the Tkuma Institute and the Territory of Memory Genocide Museum with the support of the Odesa City Department of Education. The speaker was Dr. Igor Shchupak.
During the seminar, participants discussed what historical myths and fakes continue to exist in the public consciousness and in the educational space, as well as the importance of developing in students the skills of critical analysis of information and work with historical sources. Attention was paid to the issue of the relevance of history in school textbooks and the role of the teacher in counteracting manipulation and distortion of historical facts. The practical part of the seminar was an “anti-fake” test on the history of Ukraine, prepared by “UP. Life” with the assistance of historian and participant of the project “LIKBEZ: Historical Front” Gennady Yefimenko.
Viktoriia Savchenko, a teacher of history, fundamentals of law and civics at Odesa Lyceum No. 121, shared her impressions of the seminar:
“The lecture on the topic of historical myths was extremely informative and relevant, which is especially important in today's conditions. The speaker explained complex things in an accessible and interesting way, drawing attention to the difference between historical truth, myths and fakes. It was especially valuable that the material was presented through specific examples and lively discussion, which helps to take a fresh look at school textbooks and the importance of critical understanding of historical information”.
Participants also noted the open atmosphere of the event and the opportunity for professional dialogue on the current challenges of history education in Ukraine.
