PRESENTATION OF “TKUMA” INSTITUTE PUBLICATIONS  IN COOPERATION WITH THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE OF UKRAINE

During September 27–28, the round table on “German minority as a topic in Ukrainian school and university education” was held in Ivano-Frankovsk within the frameworks of ХХVI conferences of the Association of Ukrainian Germans. “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies was also invited to the participation. During the event, new approaches of the “German stories” coverage in textbooks of national and world history were discussed.

Dr. Olena Ishchenko, “Tkuma” Institute researcher acquainted participants with the experience of including the Holocaust topic into the programs and textbooks used during history teaching. Textbook for 5th forms (authors O. Burlaka, I. Piskarova, I. Shchupak) and for 10th forms (author I. Shchupak), where World War II and the Holocaust topics were considered due to the students age-specific psychological characteristics. The participants particular attention was paid to the use of innovative multimedia technologies – QR-codes, with the help of which you can view thematic videos – caricatures, posters, photo documents with questions that allow you to learn the material more deeply.

Dr. Petro Kendzior, Ukrainian teacher, board member of the All-Ukrainian Association of Teachers of History and Social Disciplines spoke about the necessity of bearing down with pronotions’, stereotypical thinking regarding the coverage of the inter-ethnic relations topic, emphasizing positive examples of intercultural interaction for the formation of tolerance and mutual respect among modern schoolchildren. Volodymyr Leisele, chairman of the Association of Ukrainian Germans became the moderator of the event.

Mobile exhibition “Germans in Ukraine: History and Culture”, which contains the information about the life of German minority in Ukrainian lands (author of the concept and texts – German historian Dr. Alfred Eisfeld) was opened during the conference. The program finished with a guided tour of German Ivano-Frankivsk.
