"LESSONS OF WAR AND HOLOCAUST – LESSONS OF TOLERANCE"
History of the Holocaust ("Catastrophe", "Shoah"), which became one of the greatest tragedies in human history, is part of the history of Europe and Ukraine. "The Shoah fundamentally challenged the foundations of civilization. The unprecedented character of the Holocaust will always hold universal meaning" - states the Stockholm Declaration of 2000. During the Stockholm Forum it was decided to recommend the Holocaust Studies to the countries of the Council of Europe and Ukraine became the first country in the former Soviet Union that integrated the Holocaust history course to school history education. Since 2011 Ukraine marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day at the state level.
Holocaust history learning makes it possible not only to remember the tragedy of war and the suffering of the peoples of Europe, but heroism in resistance, examples of mutual aid between peoples, spiritual heroism for rescuing human lives. The Holocaust history should be learned in the context of world history and the history of Ukraine, so the topics for this Contest include the history of the Ukrainians and Russians, the tragedy of the Holodomor, the Nazi genocide against Roma, etc.
Ukraine suffered the greatest losses during World War II. That is why we appeal to citizens, public organizations and state bodies of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and other countries to join 12 International Creative Works Contest for Pupils, Students and Teachers "Lessons of War and Holocaust - Lessons of Tolerance". This competition on the base of understanding the lessons of history should promote ideas of humanism and tolerance, rejection of chauvinistic and xenophobic ideologies, violence and totalitarian ideology.
During September 27-29, 2017 Kyiv hosted Final Event of XIV International Creative Works Contest for school and university students, postgraduates and teachers “Lessons of War and Holocaust – Lessons of Tolerance”, organized by “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies under the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
56 works were selected by jury to be presented during the final event. This year 12 university students, 25 teachers – by the way not only history teachers, but also Law, Ukrainian language and literature - and 25 school students have become the finalists.
Final of the 13th International Contest for Pupils, Students and Teachers “Lessons of War and Holocaust – Lessons of Tolerance”
On September 23-25, 2016 Kyiv hosted final events of the 13th International Creative Works Contest “Lessons of War and Holocaust – Lessons of Tolerance”. It is permanent project of “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies. This year the Contest was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Babyn Yar tragedy and was conducted simultaneously with series of large-scale events organized by UJE, “Tkuma” Institute, the Holocaust Museum, other leading educational and research institutions of Ukraine.
Participants from almost all regions of Ukraine, including Luhansk and Crimea, as well as from Belarus had sent their projects. 24 history, Ukrainian language, literature teachers as well as 29 school students became this year’s finalists.
On September 28-29, 2015 in Chernivtsi the final of the XII International Creative Works Contest for Pupils, Students and Teachers “Lessons of War and Holocaust – Lessons of Tolerance” was conducted. The event was organized by “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” under the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. This year the Contest was devoted to the 74 anniversary of Babi Yar tragedy.
More than 50 teachers, pupils and students from different educational institutions from various regions of Ukraine including Luhansk and Donetsk regions and AR Crimes participated in this year’s Contest.
Among the students in the nomination “Exploratory Research” the 1 place was won by Bohdana Chopaliuk, student of the Faculty of Philology of Yu. Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, who presented the documentary “Ungathered bouquet, unsung song”. The 2 place was taken by Kostyantyn Meshko, student of the Faculty of History of Dnipropetrovsk National University, who presented historical and journalistic essay “Flowers on a Hot Stone” and Mykola Asanishvili, student of the Faculty of History of Donetsk National University with creative work “War: Heroism, Betrayal, Adaptation”.
Among pupils in the nomination “Multimedia Project” the 1 place was taken by Mykola Ilashchyk andViktor Paskar for the development of interactive map “Deportation of the Jews of Ukraine” (Chernivtsi specialized schools # 41). In the nomination “Exploratory Research” the 1 place was won by Vlada Kosyachenko, who presented the work “My Reflections on the Diary of Anne Frank” (Stavy school, Kyiv region) andAnastasiya Protchenko with research “The Memory Must Not Be Selective: the Forgotten History of Kryvyi Rih” (Kryvyi Rih Coty gymnasium). The 2 place was taken byKateryna Horbachovaand her research “Children and War: Understanding the Lessons of History” (Mariupol secondary school #44) and Oksana Sirchenko with the research “Childhood, Burnt by War” (Novohrodivska secondary school #10, Donetsk region). The 3 place was shared between Serhiy Podtynchenkowith research “Ukrainians – Righteous among the Nations” (Odesa specialized school #35) andYana Oleksenko, who researched the Holocaust in Zolotonosha region.
In nomination “Creative Skills” the 1 place was taken by Svitlana Predko (Dnipropetrovsk financial and economical lyceum)with graphics “We Remember” and Yuliya Pototska (Lubny specialized school #6, Poltava region), who presented a series of paintings (triptych) “Children and War: Understanding the Lessons of History”.
Teachers also presented their diverse works. In the nomination “Multimedia Project” places were divided as follows: the 1 place was won by Oleh Rudyi for the development of the electronic manual “Holocaust History” (history teacher, Khmelnytsky specialized school #8). The 2 place was taken by Tetiana Kosenko, who presented WEB-quest “The Holocaust - the Evil Age” (history teacher, Lysychansk secondary school #8). The 3 place was won by Oleksandr Shcherbyna for the documentary “The Unknown Story of Native City” (Director of Shchors District gymnasium, Chernihiv region.)
In the nomination “Pedagogical Skills” the 1 place was shared by Tetiana Lanevska with methodological development on Holocaust history lesson (history teacher, Kupyansk secondary school #6), Natalya Herasym with lesson plan “Holocaust in Bukovyna” (history teacher, Chernivtsi specialized school #41) and Olena Oryshkevych and her methodological development “Memory is knocking on the heart” (history teachers, Volyn region).
Olha Kucher, secondary school teacher from Sevastopol, who presented learning materials for educational classes on Holocaust for pupils of 5-6 forms “Without the Past There Is No Future”, became the diplomant of the Contest.
Finalists for this year’s Contest participated in intense program that included meetings with famous scholars and educators, discussions and excursions. The Final was held simultaneously with the work of Ukrainian-Polish Committee, so pupils, students and teachers had an opportunity to meet leading Ukrainian and Polish scholars, educators and authors of textbooks.
In addition, the finalists took part in ceremonies dedicated to Babi Yar Remembrance Day. On September 30 participants laid flowers to the memorial sign where during the Second World War ghetto was located.
The final of the 11th International Contest of Creative Works “Lessons of War and the Holocaust – Lessons of Tolerance” was held on September 28th – 29th. It was organized by “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” with support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Throughout the year, pupils, students and teachers who have decided to participate in the Contest, sent their understanding of “lessons of war and the Holocaust” reflected in research works, development of multimedia, poetry, essays and pictures.
