PRESENTATION OF “TKUMA” INSTITUTE PUBLICATIONS  IN COOPERATION WITH THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE OF UKRAINE

"Tkuma" Institute has experience in organization and conduction of educational events for school and university students, school teachers. In cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, regional institutes of advanced teacher training, "Tkuma" Institute organized special system of seminars for improvement of teachers' skills.

"Tkuma" Institute has unique experience in creating textbooks. School History textbooks created by "Tkuma" Institute won All-Ukrainian State Contests and were released in hundreds of thousands of copies.

"Tkuma" Institute effectively cooperates with regional office of Junior Academy of Sciences. On the base of "Tkuma" Institute winter and summer sessions of JAS are conducted. During this events school students have an opportunity to work with the Holocaust museum holdings, consult the Institute and Museum research associates and meet famous Ukrainian and foreign scholars.

On July 17-19, 2015 Lviv hosted All-Ukrainian Pedagogical Seminar "World War II and Holocaust History Teaching Problems During the Modern War against Ukraine". The event was organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (MESU), "Tkuma" Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies, Museum "Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine" and Ukrainian Institute of National Memory. The event became possible due to financial support of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany "Claims Conference", American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Dutch Jewish Humanitarian Fund.

The 10 International Inter-religious Youth Seminar “The Ark” is over. The event was organized on July 19 – 27 and involved 40 participants. Traditionally, representatives of different nationalities (Ukrainians, Poles, Jews and Crimean Tatars) from Ukraine became the participants.

“The Ark” program traditionally consisted of several main blocks:

-                   Educational – block of lectures and seminars conducted by Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish and Tatar scholars, representing the diverse views on important and interesting problems of history and culture;

-                   Interactive – debates, "round tables", workshops, psychological and Integrational trainings, master classes;

-                   National and cultural presentations – during Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish and Crimean Tatar thematic days participants demonstrate features of national traditions and cultures, teaching representatives of other ethnic communities. “The Ark” Participants create the real fireworks of Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish and Crimean Tatar folk ceremonies, dances, songs, games, historical stories, etc.;

-                   Spiritual and religious – this thematic block was first separated into individual day in 2014, it is dedicated to the common and especial in religious issues.

Scholars and public figures from Ukraine, Poland and Israel participated in the training program of the seminar. Among them: Dr. Aharon Weiss, Taras Boznyak,Dr. Igor Shchupak, Prof. Myroslav Marynovych, Dr Pavel Koval, Ulviye Ablayeva, Alim Aliyev, and others.

Another interesting fact of “The Ark” life is sightseeing seventh day. This year the participants visited the castle in Krasiczyn, which refers to the Renaissance castles on the territory of modern Poland, as well as a Przemysl, which belongs to the oldest Polish cities. Participants were able to see the ancient city center and enjoy its superior architecture.

“The Ark 2015” is over, but communication between the parties did not stop. Indeed, during the eight days seminar participants became not just friends, but a real family, which continues communication outside “The Ark” as well.

"Social Science Education Under the Modern Civilizational Challenges" - this was the topic of the "Summer School of Ukrainian Educators - 2015" conducted on June 18-20, 2015 in Mukolayiv region. The event was organized by Mykolayiv Regional Institute of Advanced Teacher Training in cooperation with National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences. The event gathered district methodologists, heads of methodological unions, school teachers and educators from almost all regions of Ukraine.

On June 9, 2015 the regular pedagogical seminar organized in cooperation with Dnipropetrovsk Regional Institute of Advances teacher training was confucted.

On May 19-20, 2015 “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” in cooperation with Zhytomyr Regional Institute of Advanced Teacher Training and Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University conducted All-Ukrainian Seminar for History Teachers and Methodologists “Innovational Technologies in Teaching World War II and the Holocaust History”. The event gathered about 50 teachers, methodologists, school heads and scholars from different regions of Ukraine.

During the seminar participants had an opportunity to listen to the reports by Prof. Kostyantyn Bakhanov on technological approach to history teaching at schools, and Prof. Igor Smagin on innovational aspects of modern Ukrainian History textbooks. Oleg Rudyi, teacher from Khmelnytsky, presented his experience of using multimedia e-books on the Holocaust history lessons, while Maryana Shpak, “Michael Marmer Museum” Research Associate, shared her ideas on how to deep the interest on pupils to the topic of World War II and the Holocaust via museum exhibitions. Oleksandra Bykova from Kirovograd described her own methods of using visual sources in educational process. Natalya Rudnytska, professor of Zhytomyr University, told about how the Holocaust history is researched by Zhytomyr pupils and students. The University is planning to deepen Jewish Studies and attract more students. And it is worth to be mentioned that these promises resulted in creation of special new course “History of Jews in Ukraine” that will be opened for all those interested History Department students in new school year. In its turn “Tkuma” Institute supported this initiative by donating large number of scholarly literature on Jewish istory to the University.

Oksana Andriychuk: “Lecture by Oleg Rudyi, who demonstrated different approaches and opportunities to use multimedia manuals in history lessons, showed the features of how to attract children to learning historical material via new technical opportunities … With great pleasure I listened to the reports by other teachers and practitioners who shared with us their experience and learned some new techniques in working with multimedia”.

Taisiya Verzhanska: “It was extremely interesting. For me as a young specialist the experience of teachers presented during the seminar as well as its practical application will be a model for developing my own lesson”.

Simultaneously with the seminar, on May 20, Ievgeniia Salamakha and Denys Shatalov, “Tkuma” Institute employees, organized mobile educational exhibitions for pupils of 9-11 grades of Gymnasium # 23 and Lyceum # 25. Schoolchildren were told about two tragedies of 20 c. – the Holocaust and the Armenian Genocide. Denys Shatalov noted: “I hope that after these exhibitions pupils started to think what price humanity is paying for the inability to be tolerant to Others”.
