PRESENTATION OF “TKUMA” INSTITUTE PUBLICATIONS  IN COOPERATION WITH THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE OF UKRAINE

Today, March 3, 2021, joint project of “Tkuma” Institute and the United Jewish Community of Ukraine – “Righteous Among the Nations. Ukraine” was presented.

“Righteous Among the Nations. Ukraine” is an informative and easy-to-use database dedicated to the Ukrainian Righteous Among the Nations – people who, despite the death threat to them and their families, rescued Jews who were victims of the Nazi genocide during World War II.

On the page, in addition to brief biographical data of the Righteous, which can be searched by name, article or with the help of the mother, there are short stories of their rescue of Jews in the relevant regions of Ukraine. In addition, you will be able to find answers to important questions related to the procedure for the title of “Righteous Among the Nations”, the phenomenon of rescue during the Holocaust, forms of memorialization of the feat of the Jewish Rescuers, and others.

There is not only short biographical data, but also last name, gender or search on the map. There are stories of rescue in Ukrainian regions. Moreover, the process of procedure for the title of "Righteous Among the Nations", the phenomenon of rescue during the Holocaust, forms of memorialization of the feat of the Jewish Rescuers etc. are explained.

The process of filling and updating the information in the database continues, as one of the tasks of the project is to collect the most reliable and extensive biographical data about each Righteous Among the Nations of Ukraine. So, if you are provided with any information, you can send it to the project coordinators by filling the communication form.

The academic partners of the project are the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War (Kyiv), the Holocaust Museum (Odessa), the State Archives of Vinnytsia Region and a number of other Ukrainian and foreign scientific and public organizations.

Since 2018, “Tkuma:” Institute and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” (Dnipro) together with the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War is implementing the project “Portraits.UA”, dedicated to the Ukrainian Righteous Among the Nations. You can learn more about it here.

According to the Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of February 2, 2021 “On Honoring the Memory of Ukrainians Who Rescued Jews during World War II”, May 14 was recognized as a memorable date set in honor of the Ukrainian Righteous Among the Nations and other Jewish rescuers: “Who, risking their lives and the lives of their relatives, helped Jews survive Nazi’s terror during the Holocaust”.

In 2016 a unique publication “Righteous Among the Nations: A Handbook” was published, which for the first time systematized the biographical information of the Righteous Among the Nations, included in the Yad Vashem the World Holocaust Remembrance Center (Israel), as well as Righteous from other national lists that helped Jews in Ukraine.

Ukraine ranks fourth place in the world (after Poland, the Netherlands and France) in the number of Righteous Among the Nations (2659 people on 01.011.2020).
